Professor Asima Pradhan is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. She leads the Bio-Photonics Laboratory located in SL-111 and is affiliated with the Center for Lasers and Photonics. Her research has significantly contributed to the field of biomedical optics and diagnostics.
Education:
- PhD in Physics, City University of New York (1991)
- MSc, Delhi University (1982)
- BSc, BJB College, Bhubaneswar, Orissa (1980)
Dr. Pradhan's research focuses on Biophotonics, particularly on understanding tissue fluorescence and light scattering in human tissue environments for disease diagnosis. Her recent work centers on Fluorescence Mueller matrix imaging and spectroscopy, attenuation-free fluorescence diagnostics, development of automated clinical devices, fluorescence and photoacoustic diffuse optical tomographic reconstruction algorithms, frequency domain tomography, and ultrafast fluorescence lifetime imaging. Her future research aims to advance noninvasive and early detection methods for diseases, especially cancer.
Her publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory from fundamental fluorescence spectroscopy in the 1980s-1990s toward increasingly sophisticated optical diagnostic techniques for medical applications. The research shows progression from basic tissue fluorescence analysis to complex imaging systems integrating polarization, time-resolution, and tomographic reconstruction for clinical applications.
Dr. Pradhan actively mentors students in her research group, supervising multiple PhD and MSc students in the Department of Physics. Her laboratory work bridges fundamental optical physics with practical medical diagnostic applications.
Her teaching portfolio includes Optics, Principles of Lasers, Electromagnetic Theory, and Biophotonics, reflecting her expertise across both theoretical and applied aspects of optical science.
