Ashraf Elmashat is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California (USC). He serves as the Medical Director for Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Services at USC's Health Sciences Campus (HSC). His clinical and research expertise focuses on treatment-resistant mood disorders, with an emphasis on neuromodulation techniques such as Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). He is double board-certified in Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
Dr. Elmashat has held faculty positions since 2002, previously at UC San Diego’s Department of Psychiatry before joining USC in 2020. He actively participates in medical student, resident, and fellow training within psychiatry. His research spans clinical psychopharmacology for schizophrenia and mood disorders, with leadership as Principal Investigator (PI) on multiple clinical trials.
In clinical practice, he provides specialized care for ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders, employing innovative treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression.
