Ashley Townsend

Ashley Townsend is an Associate Professor and Director of the Central Science Laboratory at the University of Tasmania’s College of Sciences and Engineering. His research focuses on analytical spectrometry and environmental chemistry, with expertise in trace metal analysis and their biogeochemical cycles in Antarctic and marine environments. He holds leadership roles in committees such as the University of Tasmania Council and chairs the Alumni Committee. Townsend’s work includes developing monitoring strategies for pristine environments and has led to prestigious awards, including the RACI Environmental Chemistry Medal (2013) and the Graeme Batley Medal (2024). He oversees the High Resolution ICP-MS facility and collaborates internationally on projects assessing ocean alkalinity, dust deposition, and Antarctic pollution.

Education: PhD (Chemistry, University of Tasmania, 1994), B.Sc. (First Class Honours, Chemistry, 1990). Research interests span chemical oceanography, inorganic geochemistry, and environmental assessment. He has authored/co-authored over 120 publications and supervised 15+ PhD/MSc candidates. His funded projects include advanced ICP-MS facility upgrades and studies on historical mining impacts. Active in service roles, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has served on RACI’s Board.

His research trends emphasize Antarctic and Southern Ocean studies, with recent work on iron cycling, dust fluxes, and ocean alkalinity effects. Grants total over $470k from ARC and collaborators.
