Dr. Ashley Pearson is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the School of Law and Society, University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. She holds a PhD and LLB(Hons) from Griffith University, alongside a BA in Japanese Studies. Her research focuses on the intersection of law and culture, particularly exploring legal themes in video games, transmedia narratives, and fandom. Pearson has held teaching and research roles at multiple institutions, including Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology.
Her academic achievements include the Griffith University Medal for undergraduate excellence and a Monbukagakusho Scholarship for PhD research in Japan. She is an active collaborator, leading edited volumes such as Law and Justice in Japanese Popular Culture (2018) and co-editing Playing Law: A Jurisprudence of Video Games and Virtual Realities (anticipated 2021). Pearson serves as Book Review Editor for the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law and holds roles in the Graphic Justice Research Alliance and Golden Key Honours Society.
Her research interests span law's presence in digital media, legal personhood in virtual contexts, and Japanese cultural studies. Notable publications include analyses of legal themes in Persona 4, Death Note, and 13 Reasons Why, alongside contributions to criminal justice reform debates.
