Dr. Ashley Danley serves as Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University's U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering. She joined FGCU in August 2015 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to full Professor, maintaining active faculty status despite her recent service as Climate and Peacekeeping Advisor for the U.S. Department of State from 2022-2024.
Her educational background includes:
- B.S. in Environmental and Civil Engineering from Florida State University (2010)
- Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Duke University (2014)
- Certificate in International Development Policy from Duke University (2014)
Dr. Danley's research focuses on water infrastructure in humanitarian contexts, combining engineering expertise with international development. Her fieldwork spans Haiti, Vietnam (where she lived during doctoral research), and UN missions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bangladesh, UAE, Ghana, and Belgium. She examines how environmental management intersects with conflict resolution and climate resilience, particularly in municipal wastewater systems.
Her professional recognition includes:
- AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (2022-2024)
As a licensed Professional Engineer, she leverages prior experience as a Southwest Florida municipal water consultant to inform both classroom instruction and international policy advising. Her current work bridges engineering practice with diplomatic efforts to improve environmental governance in fragile states.
