Ashley Carson Brown is an Associate Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill). She leads the Advanced Wound Healing Lab, which focuses on developing biomaterials for hemostasis, wound healing, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Brown holds a B.S. in Biosystems Engineering from Clemson University (2006) and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Georgia Tech (2011). She completed postdoctoral studies at Georgia Tech as an American Heart Association (AHA) Fellow. Her research is supported by NIH, NSF, AHA, and DOD grants.
Research interests include fibrin-based biomaterials, platelet-mimetic therapies, and nanogel drug delivery systems. Notable achievements include co-founding Selsym Biotech (2019) and serving as Co-Director of NCSU’s Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI). Dr. Brown has received awards such as the NSF CAREER Award, AIMBE Fellowship, and AHA Fellowship. Her lab has produced over 50 publications, including studies in Nature Communications, Science Translational Medicine, and ACS Nano.
- Lab Leadership: Directs a team of ~20 students/postdocs working on hemostasis, biomaterials, and regenerative engineering.
- Awards: AIMBE Fellow, AHA Fellow, NSF CAREER Award, Biomaterials Science Emerging Investigator.
- Grants: Over $5M in NIH/NSF funding for projects on thrombosis, fibrosis, and trauma medicine.
Labs/Teams: Brown Lab (NCSU), CMI Co-Directorship, Selsym Biotech collaborations. Current projects include clot-targeted nanogels for disseminated intravascular coagulation and neonatal hemostasis solutions.
