Dr. Ashley B. Morris is a Professor of Biology and Curator of the Ives Herbarium (FUGR) at Furman University. She specializes in plant population genetics and conservation biology, focusing on clonal reproduction in rare plants and endangered species recovery. Morris holds a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Florida, an M.S. from the University of Tennessee, and a B.S. from the University of the South-Sewanee. She previously held faculty positions at Middle Tennessee State University and the University of South Alabama.
Her research emphasizes conservation genetics, particularly in limestone cedar glade ecosystems and endangered species like Dalea foliosa and Sagittaria fasciculata. She collaborates with institutions such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Southeastern Grasslands Institute. Morris is actively involved in professional societies, serving in leadership roles with the Association of Southeastern Biologists and the Botanical Society of America.
Her work has been funded by grants from USFWS and other agencies, supporting projects on genetic diversity, clonal structure, and habitat preservation. Morris mentors undergraduate and graduate students in field and lab research, emphasizing hands-on experience in conservation genetics and biodiversity studies.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Botany, University of Florida (2006)
- M.S., Botany, University of Tennessee (2001)
- B.S., Natural Resources, University of the South-Sewanee (1998)
Morris's recent studies include developing genetic tools for endangered species management and exploring niche shifts in response to climate change. Her lab's projects integrate field surveys, molecular techniques, and computational modeling to inform conservation strategies. Notable achievements include the 2024 Richard and Minnie Windler Award for outstanding contributions to botanical research.
