Ashani Amarasinghe is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics at the University of Sydney, holding a PhD from Monash University. She is a member of the Sydney Environment Institute and maintains an active research profile in political economy and development.
Her educational background includes a doctoral degree from Monash University. Her research focuses on political economy, development economics, and network empirics, with particular emphasis on institutions, conflict, and development dynamics. She employs innovative data-driven methodologies to investigate complex socio-economic phenomena.
Recent publications (2022-2024) in high-impact journals like the Journal of Public Economics and Journal of Development Economics reveal consistent thematic threads: analyzing domestic conflict resolution mechanisms, public sentiment during crises, and network-based economic development frameworks. Her work demonstrates sophisticated integration of network theory with empirical political economy.
Dr. Amarasinghe serves as Associate Editor and Social Media Editor for the Australian Economic Papers. She actively mentors early-career researchers through the Applied Young Economist Webinar series she founded, which connects PhD students and PostDocs globally.
She co-organizes the Social Conflict and Political Economy (SCoPE) Workshop funded by the Australian Research Council and the 2024 Australian Political Economy Network (APEN) Workshop, fostering international collaboration in political economy research. Her current ARC Discovery Project grant (2023) investigates 'Political Conflict, Inefficient Markets, and Food Crises'.
