Dr. Ash Willmott is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Research at the Cambridge Centre for Sport & Exercise Sciences (CCSES) within Anglia Ruskin University's Faculty of Science and Engineering, School of Psychology, Sport and Sensory Science. He teaches across Sport and Exercise Science programs and holds leadership roles including Lab Director, Chair of the Climate Change Action Team (CCAT), and Course Leader. A BASES-accredited scientist and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), his research focuses on human physiological responses to environmental extremes.
His expertise spans heat acclimation strategies, altitude physiology, thermoregulation, gut health during exercise, and energy expenditure analysis. He maintains active collaborations with national sports institutes and elite athletes, and serves as a trustee for the altitude awareness charity Para-Monte.
Dr. Willmott's publication trends reveal a focus on environmental physiology (heat/altitude stress), sports nutrition interventions, Paralympic athlete performance, and applied thermal management strategies. Recent work emphasizes nutritional phytocomplexes, COVID-19 rehabilitation, and athlete monitoring technologies.
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)
- Chartered Scientist (CSci)
- BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist
He currently supervises 7 PhD students researching topics including injury prevalence in footballers, classification systems for visually impaired golfers, marathon pacing, and hypoxia applications. His research funding includes projects for Para-Monte, BodyChilz Ltd., and the UK National Fire Service, alongside consultancy for extreme environment expeditions and sports technology validation.
Dr. Willmott directs research operations at CCSES and leads the Climate Change Action Team, facilitating industry partnerships and knowledge translation in environmental physiology.
