Asbjørn Otto Christophersen is an Associate Professor in the Division of Anatomy at the University of Oslo's Department of Molecular Medicine, within the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences. He holds a dual role as a physician-scientist, combining clinical work in rheumatology at Oslo University Hospital with academic research. His research focuses on immunological mechanisms in autoimmune diseases, particularly celiac disease, emphasizing T-cell biology, gluten-specific immune responses, and diagnostic advancements.
Education: MD from Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (2008), PhD in Immunology from the University of Oslo (2015). Postdoctoral training includes Stanford University (2016-2017) and continued research at the KG Jebsen Coeliac Disease Research Centre.
Research Interests: T-cell responses in autoimmune conditions, development of tetramer-based diagnostics, molecular mechanisms of gluten-induced immunopathology, and translational immunology. Key contributions include identifying gluten T-cell epitopes and characterizing T-cell phenotypes in celiac disease progression.
Awards: Julia Bodmer Award (2019), Fulbright Scholarship (2016-2017), and multiple grants from Norwegian and international funding bodies. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with publications in Nature, Science, and Advanced Science.
Grants & Teams: Leads projects funded by BIOTEK2021, the Research Council of Norway, and the Unger-Vetlesen Medical Fund. Collaborates with the KG Jebsen Coeliac Disease Research Centre and multidisciplinary teams at Oslo University Hospital. Active in lab-based research and clinical trials.
