Associate Professor Asadul Haque is a tenured full-time academic in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Monash University, Australia. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wollongong and has extensive expertise in geotechnical engineering, specializing in non-destructive material characterization using X-ray CT, microstructural behavior of soils, carbon sequestration, and railway geotechnics. He has secured over $5M in research grants, including ARC Discovery and Linkage projects, and leads world-class facilities like the X-Ray Microscopy Facility for Imaging Geo-materials (XMFIG).
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bangladesh Institute of Technology (1987)
- Master of Engineering, Asian Institute of Technology (1992)
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of Wollongong (1999)
- Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, Monash University (2005)
Research Interests:
Dr. Haque’s work focuses on advancing sustainable geotechnical practices, including:
- Carbon sequestration in deep saline aquifers
- Microstructural evolution of soils under in-situ loading
- Rock-socketed pile design and bearing mechanisms
- Geothermal energy systems and reservoir performance
- Use of industrial by-products for soil improvement
Grants & Contributions:
He has secured major grants including $3.8M in ARC LIEF grants for laboratory infrastructure and $5M in competitive and industry-funded projects. His research has led to innovations in ground improvement using lime-slag and biochar sequestration, and he has published extensively in top journals like Geotechnique and Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.
Professional Roles:
Past Director of Teaching (Civil Engineering, 2014-2015) and Program Leader for the Master of Infrastructure Engineering & Management (2003-2017). Current Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
Labs & Facilities:
Leads the XMFIG facility and contributes to advanced testing chambers for deep geological applications, enabling high-resolution imaging and macro-scale geomechanical studies.
