Dr. Asad Kiyani is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Victoria, specializing in criminal law, international law, and critical legal theory. He holds advanced degrees from Osgoode Hall (LLB), Cambridge (LLM, Distinction), and UBC (PhD), where he received prestigious fellowships. His research focuses on race and criminal justice, police powers, and TWAIL perspectives, with publications in leading journals like the Supreme Court Law Review and Journal of International Criminal Justice. He co-authored the legal casebook Criminal Law & Procedure: Cases and Materials and has held grants analyzing racial profiling in judicial systems.
Dr. Kiyani’s academic career includes teaching at the University of Calgary and Western Ontario, alongside roles as a Research Associate with UVic’s Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives. He has received multiple awards for scholarship and teaching, including the Antonio Cassese Prize (2017) and the Hessel Yntema Prize (2019). His work bridges legal theory and practice, addressing systemic inequities in criminal justice and international law structures.
Before academia, he practiced law in Canada and the UK, working on high-profile cases such as the Special Court for Sierra Leone appeal for Issa Hassan Sesay. He remains engaged in legal aid initiatives and international legal capacity-building, including postings to Ethiopia with the Canadian Bar Association.
