Arya Gupta

Dr. Arya Gupta serves as a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at Leeds Beckett University's School of Health and Centre for Biomedical Science Research, teaching Microbial World, Medical & Environmental Microbiology, Public Health Epidemiology, and Enterprise Biomedical Science courses.

His academic journey includes a BSc in Microbiology from St. Xavier's College (Kolkata), an MSc in Bioscience (Infection and Immunity) from the University of Leeds, and a PhD from Leeds (2017) focused on aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase inhibitors for bacterial infections.

Gupta's research centers on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in MRSA and ESKAPE pathogens, with three core pillars: developing novel treatment regimes through drug repurposing to enhance antibiotic efficacy, investigating MRSA-nasal microbiota interactions, and creating point-of-care diagnostic tools. His interdisciplinary approach bridges molecular microbiology, public health, and translational innovation, notably through pro bono consulting for PHappi's women's health initiatives.

Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2018-2024) reveals dominant themes in DNA repair-targeted combinatorial therapies (leveraging cancer drugs against resistant bacteria), bacteriophage-mediated AMR transfer dynamics, and polymicrobial infection models using artificial sputum systems. His work consistently emphasizes molecular mechanisms underlying resistance evolution and therapeutic counterstrategies.

Since 2021, Gupta has contributed scientific expertise to PHappi's UTI treatment development while maintaining active research collaborations. His prior roles include postdoctoral positions at St. George's University of London (developing MRSA resistance transfer assays) and University of Kent (targeting DNA repair in cancer-related infections), followed by a Knowledge Transfer Partnership at Leeds focused on aviation fuel contamination detection.

He actively participates in the Centre for Biomedical Science Research, leading projects on AMR mechanisms and diagnostic development while fostering cross-disciplinary partnerships in infectious disease research.
