Aruna Sivakumar is a Professor of Consumer Demand Modelling & Urban Systems at Imperial College London's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering. She leads the Urban Systems Lab and directs initiatives such as the EU Sharing Cities project's monitoring and evaluation work package, the IDLES project's decentralized energy demand modeling, and the Pathways project's accessibility framework for equity analysis. Her research focuses on activity-based microsimulation models of urban resource demands, with over 40 peer-reviewed papers and 100+ conference presentations. She secured £1.8m in funding over five years from EPSRC, ESRC, Shell, and SMRT Singapore.
Education includes a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (2005), an MSc from the same institution (2001), and a Bachelor of Technology from IIT Madras (1999).
Research interests span transportation systems, urban planning, and sustainable energy. Key projects include modeling electric vehicle adoption, smart city frameworks, and decarbonization pathways. She chairs committees like the TRB's Travel Behaviour and Values subcommittee and serves on the editorial board of Transportation Letters.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, with affiliations to the Grantham Institute, Energy Futures Lab, and Digital City Exchange. Recent studies explore behavioral dimensions of transport decarbonization and equity in mobility systems.
