Arthur Shores is an Associate Professor (Honorary) in the School of Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University. He has a long-standing career in neuropsychology, including roles as Director of Postgraduate Neuropsychology programs and Director of a private medicolegal consultancy. His research focuses on post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and cognitive impairment screening tools. He developed the Westmead PTA Scale and its abbreviated version (A-WPTAS), widely used in clinical settings. He also holds an external position as a Clinical Mentor (non-practicing) at Advanced Neuropsychological Treatment Services.
Education: MA (Hons) in Neuropsychology from the University of Melbourne, BA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of KwaZulu Natal, and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney.
Research interests include diagnostic accuracy of screening tools, deception detection in clinical assessments, substance use disorders, and sports-related concussion. Recent work includes validation studies of cognitive assessment tools and investigations into the efficacy of synbiotics in hepatic encephalopathy.
Notable projects include three studies (2009–2010) validating the A-WPTAS in acute TBI settings, funded through Research Outside Studies Programs. His publications span neurology, neuropsychology, and public health, with a focus on improving clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.
