Arthur Samuel is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science at Stony Brook University and Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Basque Center on Cognition Brain & Language. His pioneering research explores human information processing mechanisms, particularly speech perception, auditory recognition, and cognitive architecture.
Dr. Samuel's laboratory investigates spoken language comprehension through multiple methodologies, examining both bottom-up signal processing and top-down cognitive influences. Key research areas include phonemic restoration, perceptual adaptation to accented speech, and the relationship between speech production/perception. His work extends to non-linguistic domains like music perception and visual attention, revealing fundamental cognitive principles.
With over 100 publications, his recent work examines lexical activation dynamics, dialect accommodation, and cross-modal perceptual interactions. He has mentored numerous PhD students and contributes to major journals including Journal of Memory and Language and Cognitive Psychology.
