His work focuses on oral history, labour history, occupational health, and deindustrialisation, particularly in British coalfield communities. He has authored/co-authored major works such as Miners’ Lung (2007), Working Lives: Work in Britain since 1945 (2013), and Men in Reserve (2016). Current research includes oral histories of deindustrialisation and disability post-1945. His AHRC-funded projects highlight critical perspectives on industrial heritage and working-class experiences.
Research Interests: McIvor’s work critiques the romanticization of industrial heritage, emphasizing workers’ lived experiences over physical artifacts. His approach integrates political and class analyses to explore labor struggles, health impacts, and socio-economic changes.
Professional Contributions: As director of the Scottish Oral History Centre, he leads initiatives documenting marginalized histories. Collaborative projects like Men in Reserve showcase interdisciplinary approaches to historical narratives.
