Arthur Martin, a Professor of Biology at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), has been recognized as the Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year in 2023 by the Michigan Association of State Universities. His teaching approach emphasizes experiential learning, including initiatives like the SVSU mobile lab outreach to underserved communities and field research in the Cayman Islands. Martin has been a faculty member at SVSU since 2008 and has significantly impacted the biology curriculum and undergraduate research opportunities.
Dr. Martin's research focuses on crayfish behavior, particularly their responses to environmental factors such as hypoxia and shelter availability. He has mentored 30 undergraduate students, many of whom have pursued advanced degrees or careers in biology-related fields. His work often explores the intersection of ecology and behavioral biology, with notable contributions to understanding how chemical and mechanical signals influence agonistic encounters.
His publications span from 2000 to 2024, with a primary emphasis on crayfish behavior, ecological interactions, and environmental impacts. While some articles delve into organic chemistry, most of his work centers on behavioral ecology, shelter preference, and predator-prey dynamics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Kawkawlin River Watershed Association, and a subgrant from the National Science Foundation.
Scientific Awards:
- Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year (2023)
- Franc A. Landee Teaching Excellence Award (2021)
Dr. Martin has demonstrated a strong commitment to undergraduate education by mentoring students in research projects and presenting at national and regional conferences. He has also led community initiatives through the Saginaw Bay Environmental Science Institute, engaging students and community members in environmental research.
