Arthur Garforth is a Professor of Catalysis at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science (CEAS). He holds honorary roles in academic and research administration. His research focuses on heterogeneous catalysis, structured catalyst fabrication, and environmental sustainability, particularly in polymer recycling and hydrocracking. He has supervised 27 PhD students and secured over £2M in grants, including notable awards like the Royal Society Brian Mercer Award (2008) and the ExxonMobil Excellence in Teaching Gold Medal (2008).
Garforth's career includes leadership roles such as Director of Teaching and Learning (2011–2019) and Director of Undergraduate Studies (2004–2009). He has led IChemE accreditation visits and contributed to policy development in chemical engineering education. His research group explores sustainable technologies for waste plastics, including the NovaCrack project for polymer hydrocracking and collaborations with industry partners like B&M Longworth. He actively participates in conferences and organizes events, such as the International Conference on Environmental Catalysis (2020).
