Artem Chernikov

Artem Chernikov is a Professor and the Michael Brin Endowed Chair in Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research focuses on model theory, particularly Shelah's classification theory (stability, simplicity, NIP, NTP2), and its applications to algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and computer science. He has held academic positions at UCLA from 2015 to 2023, progressing from Assistant to Full Professor. Chernikov earned his Ph.D. in Mathematical Logic from Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (2012) under Itaï Ben Yaacov, and prior education includes a master's from Humboldt University Berlin and a diploma in Information Systems from the State University of Telecommunications in St. Petersburg.

His research interests emphasize the interplay between model theory and combinatorics, including studies on dependent (NIP) theories, valued fields, and applications to algebraic structures. Chernikov has organized numerous conferences and workshops, including events at the Fields Institute, National University of Singapore, and CIRM. He is an editor for Model theory and Mathematical Logic Quarterly.

Key awards include the Sacks Prize (2013) for best thesis in mathematical logic, Sloan Research Fellowship (2016), NSF CAREER Award (2017), and Simons Fellowship (2020). His funded projects include NSF grants exploring model-theoretic classification and its combinatorial applications.

Chernikov has advised numerous graduate students (e.g., Alex Mennen, Chuyin Jiang) and postdocs (e.g., Benjamin Castle, Mariana Vicaria). He also supervises undergraduate research, including projects on logic and model theory. His work bridges foundational logic with applied areas like combinatorics and algebraic geometry.
