Dr. Artel Great is an Assistant Professor and the George and Judy Marcus Endowed Chair in African American Cinema Studies at San Francisco State University's School of Cinema. His research focuses on Black cinema, visual culture, and the intersections of race, media, and social justice. He holds a Ph.D. from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and is UCLA's first Black valedictorian in Theater, Film, and Television.

His research explores Black intellectual traditions, subversive humor, and the cultural politics of cinema. Recent publications include The Black Pack: Comedy, Race, & Resistance (2025) and edited volumes like Black Cinema & Visual Culture (2023). His films Love Walks In and Love Like Winter have screened at major festivals and platforms.
Awards: Independent Spirit Award nomination, Sundance Episodic Lab Finalist. His work critiques racial narratives in media and advocates for decolonizing Black representation.
