Arshnee Moodley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology. Her research focuses on antibiotic resistance mechanisms, zoonotic disease transmission, and novel antimicrobial alternatives including bacteriophage therapy.
Education:
- B.Sc, University of the Witwatersrand (2002)
- B.Sc (Hons), University of the Witwatersrand (2003)
- M.Sc (Med) in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, University of the Witwatersrand (2005)
- PhD in Antibiotic Resistance and Zoonosis, University of Copenhagen (2008)
Her research program integrates next-generation whole genome sequencing, animal modeling, and in vitro adhesion assays to investigate host-pathogen interactions of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP). Current projects examine bacteriophage cocktails for treating canine skin infections, antibiotic effects on gene expression, and One Health approaches to antimicrobial resistance in low-resource settings across Africa.
Scientific Recognition:
- Awarded Sapere Aude for Young Elite Researchers (2012)
- Recipient of Danish Council for Independent Research funding
- Marie Curie PhD Fellowship recipient
- Multiple international travel grants and early-career awards
Dr. Moodley actively supervises doctoral candidates and contributes to international networks including TRAIN-ASAP and Seqnet.org. Her collaborative work spans Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, and Portugal, addressing antimicrobial resistance through the One Health lens with emphasis on poultry farming systems and community health.
