Aro Velmet is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) since 2023 and concurrently a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Tartu's Institute of Social Studies (since 2021). His research focuses on the history of science, colonialism, and transnational modernity. Velmet holds a PhD from New York University (2017) and has held fellowships at the University of Oxford and the University of Tartu. He has authored award-winning works on French colonial science and Estonian digital governance.
Education: Doctorate in History from New York University (2017), supervised by Herrick Chapman and Frederick Cooper. Key projects include 'The Crisis and Transformation of Industrial Modernity, 1900-2055' (Estonian Research Council, 2024–2028) and 'Reshaping Estonian Energy Systems' (2019–2023).
Research interests span science's role in colonialism, digital state formation, and transnational history. His recent publications analyze Estonia's digital infrastructure and the historical intersections of medicine and empire.
