Arnold Tukker is Professor of Industrial Ecology at the Department of Industrial Ecology, Leiden Institute for Environmental Sciences (CML), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Leiden University. His work focuses on quantifying the environmental impacts of economic activities through tools like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Analysis (MFA), with a strong emphasis on circular economy, sustainable production, and resource efficiency. As director of CML and scientific director of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability, he integrates Leiden's expertise in raw materials with Delft's sustainable technology research and Rotterdam's business model innovation.
- Education: PhD in Industrial Ecology (Tilburg University, 1998), MSc in Chemistry (Utrecht University)
Research spans quantifying physical economies, circularity challenges, and policy-relevant sustainability indicators. Recent projects include CarbonCap, Rare Earth Supply Chain analysis, and CircuMat for urban-industrial metabolism. His work reveals critical tensions between economic growth and resource use, advocating for data-driven innovation to meet climate goals.
Awards: Distinguished Professor at Leiden University (2023). His collaborations include TNO, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the Polderlab with biologist Maarten Schrama. Arnold advises PhD candidates Bertram de Boer, Stephanie Cap, and Antoine Coudard, while former students like Kai Li and Sander van Nielen continue their research careers.
