University of Minnesota Twin Citiesمعرفی
Arnd Scheel is a Professor in the School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota. He has held faculty positions at UMN since 2001, progressing from Associate Professor (2001-2004) to Full Professor (2004-present). Previously, he was Assistant Professor at Freie Universität Berlin (1994-2001). His education includes a PhD from Freie Universität Berlin (1994) and a DEA from INLN Université de Nice (1991).
Scheel's research focuses on nonlinear phenomena in partial differential equations, particularly:
- Dynamics of pattern formation in physical and biological systems
- Mechanisms of wave propagation and instability
- Self-organization in complex systems
- Mathematical modeling of ecological and material processes
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on pattern formation mechanisms across physical, biological, and ecological systems. Recent work explores front propagation dynamics, self-organization in active matter, and pattern selection in spatially extended systems. Computational methods complement rigorous mathematical analysis throughout his research.
Scientific Awards:
- SIAM Fellow (2016)
- Humboldt Research Award (2016)
- J.D. Crawford Award (2009)
Scheel leads an active research group, advising 14 PhD students to completion. He directs the Complex Systems REU program, securing NSF funding for undergraduate research. Current research initiatives include studies of self-organization in biological motility and pattern formation in growing domains.
