Dr. Armin Köhl is a Research Scientist at the Institute of Oceanography, University of Hamburg, specializing in Remote Sensing & Assimilation. He has held this position since 2004 following a postdoctoral career at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2000–2004) and the University of Kiel (2000). He earned his PhD in 1999 from the University of Kiel and a Physics diploma in 1995 from the University of Düsseldorf.
His research focuses on data assimilation methods, ocean circulation modeling, and climate prediction. Key areas include understanding mechanisms driving sea level variability, meridional overturning circulation, and ocean mixing processes. He actively contributes to projects like THOR (EU FP7), NACLIM, and MiKlip for decadal climate forecasting.
His work integrates observational data with advanced models to address topics like Arctic Ocean state estimation, sensitivity analysis of marine heatwaves, and improving climate model initialization techniques. Over 118 publications reflect his expertise in ocean-atmosphere interactions and Earth system dynamics.
Notable contributions include analyzing MPI-ESM simulations for sea level projections, evaluating ocean reanalyses (e.g., GECCO3), and advancing adjoint method applications for climate model tuning.
