Dr. Armando Azua-Bustos is a Professor in the Department of Natural Sciences at Saint Louis University-Madrid. An astrobiologist specializing in extreme environments, his research focuses on the Atacama Desert as a Mars analog, investigating microbial life in one of Earth's driest places where some areas haven't seen rain for 400 years.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2013 (homologated by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2017)
- M.Sc. in Biological Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2010
- M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Universidad de Chile, 2005
- Agricultural Engineer, Fruit Culture and Wine Making, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 1997
Dr. Azua-Bustos' research centers on environmental microbiology in extreme environments, particularly xerophiles and astrobiology. Growing up in Chile's Atacama Desert region, he brings unique insight to studying how microbial life adapts to conditions analogous to Mars. His work examines the limits of life in arid environments, the transport of microorganisms via wind, and implications for finding life beyond Earth. He has discovered numerous microbial species in the hyperarid core of the Atacama, pushing our understanding of life's resilience at water activity levels as low as 0.15.
His recent publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary focus bridging microbiology, planetary science, and climate studies. Key themes include microbial adaptation to extreme desiccation through molecular shields like trehalose, the relationship between water activity and microbial survival, and implications for detecting life on Mars. His research has identified novel species in Maria Elena South, the driest place on Earth, with potential biomedical applications including new antibiotic discoveries.
Scientific Recognition:
- TED Fellow 2017 with multiple TED/TEDx talks
- Featured in National Geographic's Year Million documentary
- Over 100 international media features including Scientific American, New Scientist, and PBS Nova
Dr. Azua-Bustos actively collaborates with international research teams as a member of the ExoMars Rover Science Operations Working Group and the Search for Life in Venus Clouds Mission. His work has significant implications for planetary protection protocols and the search for extraterrestrial life. He serves as Board Editor for the Journal Universe and Review Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology.
His laboratory work focuses on analyzing microbial communities in the Atacama Desert's most extreme environments, studying their adaptation mechanisms and implications for astrobiology. Through collaborations with NASA and other international space agencies, his research directly informs planetary exploration strategies. He has also authored the children's book 'Are we alone among aaaaall these stars?' to introduce astrobiology concepts to young readers.
