Aristides Marcano Olaizola

Dr. Aristides Marcano Olaizola is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Engineering at Delaware State University (DSU). He holds a Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematical Sciences from Moscow State University (1980) and an M.S. in Physics and Mathematics (With Honors) from the same institution (1977). His research focuses on applied and nonlinear optics, Raman and photothermal spectroscopy, and the characterization of optical materials, particularly in the context of singlet oxygen generation and photodynamic therapy.

Dr. Marcano has secured significant grants, including a $749,798 DOD grant (2023–2026) for studying singlet oxygen generation via stimulated Raman methods and an NSF HBCU Excellence in Research grant ($498,372) for investigating enhancer-free photogenerated singlet oxygen (2018–2021). He has also led initiatives like the NSF INCLUDES DDLP program to enhance diversity in energy and environmental sustainability.

His research interests span nonlinear optics, laser spectroscopy, thermal lensing, and fiber optics sensors. Key contributions include developing high-sensitivity detection systems for metallic nanoparticles and advancing photothermal methods for material characterization. Dr. Marcano teaches courses such as Principles of Lasers and Optical Devices and Theoretical and Experimental Research.
