Arild Gustavsen

Arild Gustavsen is a Professor of Building Physics at the Department of Architecture and Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He holds a cand. scient. (1996) and dr. ing. (2001) in energy/environmental physics and building physics, respectively. His career includes roles as Senior Lecturer (2000-2001), Associate Professor (2001-2006), and Professor (2007–present). He has also served as a Senior Researcher at SINTEF Building Research and a Visiting Researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He led the Research Center for Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB, 2012–2017) and the Research Center for Zero Emission Areas in Smart Cities (ZEN, 2016–2022).

Research interests focus on heat, air, and moisture transport in building structures, sustainable materials, and energy efficiency in urban environments. His work emphasizes zero emission buildings and neighborhoods, with contributions to international standards and policy frameworks. Notable projects include the ZEB Laboratory and development of the ZEN framework for smart city decarbonization.

Publications span over two decades, with recent emphasis on open geospatial data for energy assessment, thermal performance of building components, and lifecycle GHG emissions in tropical/subtropical climates. His research bridges technical innovation with societal needs, addressing urban sustainability and climate resilience.

He has advised numerous collaborative projects involving academia, industry, and government, fostering knowledge exchange through initiatives like IEA EBC Annex 72. Leadership roles in FME ZEB and ZEN highlight his commitment to interdisciplinary solutions for climate-neutral built environments.
