Arild Engelsen Ruud is a Professor of South Asia Studies at the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Humanities, affiliated with the Department of Culture, Religion, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics. His research focuses on political culture in Asia, particularly Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines, with emphasis on authoritarianism, populism, democracy perceptions, criminal leadership, and the intersection of religion and politics. He has led significant roles, including Head of Research at his department (2015–2020) and Board Member at the Centre for Development and Environment (2013–2021). His work explores topics like political dynasties, sovereignty concepts, and blasphemy laws, contributing to global understanding of South Asian governance.
