Ariela Schachter is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Department Associate Chair at Washington University in St. Louis, where she also serves as Associate Director of the Weidenbaum Center and Faculty Affiliate in Asian American Studies. Her research focuses on immigration, race relations, and inequality in the U.S., employing experimental methods, causal inference, and big data analysis. She holds a PhD from Stanford University (2016) and a BA from Rice University (2009).
Her work examines public attitudes toward immigrants, racial/ethnic classification practices, and residential segregation via the housing market. Key projects include studies on how race/ethnicity and legal status shape social integration, the role of ancestry/color/culture in racial classification, and the impact of online rental housing information on segregation. She has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the Louis Wirth Best Article Award from the ASA's International Migration Section.
Collaborations include work with Max Besbris on housing markets (NSF-funded), René Flores on racial classification, and Margot Moinester on immigration enforcement effects. Her research bridges sociological theory with applied methods, addressing contemporary issues of inequality and belonging.
