Ariel Ron is the Glenn M. Linden Associate Professor of the U.S. Civil War Era and Director of the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He holds a Ph.D. (2012) and M.A. (2007) from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. (2000) from the University of Maryland, College Park. His research focuses on 19th-century U.S. political economy, emphasizing agriculture, energy, and economic development. Ron’s first book, Grassroots Leviathan: Northern Agricultural Reform in the Slaveholding Republic (2020), won major awards from the Agricultural History Society and the Center for Civil War Research. His current project, King Hay: The Equine Energy Regime in America, 1800–1950, explores the centrality of horse power and hay production to U.S. industrialization.
His academic publications span energy history, Civil War finance, and state development. He has held fellowships at institutions including the Library of Congress’s Kluge Center and Yale University. Ron also serves as a Senior Policy Advisor for the Good Food Institute, advocating for alternative protein industries. His teaching includes courses on the Civil War, energy history, and the intellectual history of capitalism.
Ron’s awards include the Theodore Saloutos Memorial Award (2020) and the Wiley Silver Prize (2020). His work bridges scholarly research and public engagement, with contributions to Noema, Slate, and The American Prospect.
