Ariel BenYishay serves as Assistant Professor of Economics in the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at the College of William & Mary and holds the position of Chief Economist at AidData, a research laboratory based at the university. His work integrates development economics with advanced geospatial methodologies to evaluate the human and ecological impacts of international development programs.
His academic credentials include a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh Honors College and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining William & Mary, he taught at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
BenYishay's research program centers on development economics with specialized expertise in program evaluation and empirical microeconomics. He pioneers the application of geospatial analysis and remote sensing to study critical issues including tropical deforestation, climate resilience in agricultural systems, and the role of social networks in sustainable development. His methodological innovations combine satellite imagery with randomized control trials to measure development intervention impacts with unprecedented spatial precision.
Analysis of his 2022-2025 publications reveals a dominant focus on geospatial impact evaluation across diverse contexts including irrigation systems in Mali, road infrastructure in Cambodia, and agricultural interventions in Malawi and Bangladesh. His work consistently demonstrates how spatial data enhances understanding of climate adaptation, land governance, and aid effectiveness in developing regions.
As Chief Economist of AidData, BenYishay leads the lab's geospatial analysis initiatives which include producing publicly accessible foreign assistance data through the GeoQuery platform and conducting geospatial impact evaluations in partnership with governments and NGOs worldwide. His leadership connects academic research with practical development applications through innovative data tools and rigorous evaluation frameworks.
