Arie van Nes

Arie van Nes is an Associate Professor at the Department of Population Health Sciences within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University. His work focuses on preventing zoonotic pathogen transmission, particularly livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) and Clostridioides difficile from pigs and poultry to humans.

• Specialized in Swine Herd Health (ECVPH) and epidemiology (ECPHM)
• Leads the poultry health group with Dr. Mieke Matthijs
• Active in academic governance as chairman of the pig health specialization board and exam committee member

Research Highlights:

• Developed microbiome-based interventions to reduce LA-MRSA in pigs (MRSA-PREVENT project, 2018–2022)
• Focus on competitive-exclusion strategies using bacterial species to prevent MRSA colonization
• Interdisciplinary collaboration with industrial partners to improve farm hygiene and public health
