Arianna Baggiolini is an Assistant Professor at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), affiliated with the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR) in the BIOS+ network. She leads an independent research group focusing on melanoma oncogenic competence, developmental chromatin programs, and stem cell biology. Previously, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) under Dr. Lorenz Studer, where she explored neural crest development and melanoma formation.
Her education includes a BSc and MSc in Biology from ETH Zurich and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Zurich. Key contributions include defining oncogenic competence in melanoma and elucidating roles of developmental chromatin factors in tumor initiation and neural maturation. Baggiolini’s research integrates cancer biology, stem cell engineering, and developmental pathways to uncover mechanisms underlying tumor progression and therapeutic vulnerabilities.
Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Christopher J. Marshall Award (Society for Melanoma Research), SNSF Starting Grant, and the Hofschneider Professorship. Current research emphasizes lipid metabolism in melanoma, epigenetic barriers to neuronal maturation, and translational approaches to modulate glial cells in spinal cord injury.
Baggiolini’s lab employs cutting-edge techniques like patient-derived organoids and CRISPR-based models to study tumor heterogeneity and cellular plasticity. She actively collaborates on projects addressing neurodevelopmental disorders and cancer stem cell therapies, with a focus on translating basic discoveries into clinical applications.
