Dr. Ari Purnama is a tenured Assistant Professor of Screen Media in Utrecht University's Department of Media and Culture Studies (School of Humanities) and Research Fellow at the University of the Free State, South Africa. He holds a PhD in Film Studies and a cum laude Research Master's in Film and Television Studies from the University of Groningen. Previously, he held academic positions at the University of Oregon, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Groningen, and Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.
His research bridges screen media aesthetics, production cultures, and education, with focus areas including:
- Transnational film aesthetics and decolonizing cinematography
- Youth engagement with screen media and mental health impacts
- Southeast Asian/East African production cultures
- AI-generated media and diversity in screen industries
- Socially engaged filmmaking and Sustainable Development Goals
His scholarly publications demonstrate consistent focus on Southeast Asian cinematic practices, particularly Indonesian and Thai cinema, examining stylistic evolution, cultural politics, and production methodologies. Recent works show increased attention to digital media's societal impact and youth engagement.
