Areendam Chanda is a Professor of Economics at Louisiana State University's E. J. Ourso College of Business, where he holds the Thomas Singletary Distinguished Professor of Business Administration title. His research focuses on macroeconomics, economic growth, regional development, and the Indian economy, with significant contributions to understanding long-term growth patterns and monetary policy effects.
Dr. Chanda earned his PhD in Economics from Brown University in 2001, following an MA from Brown (1997), an MA from Delhi School of Economics (1996), and a BA (Honours) in Economics from the University of Delhi (1994). His scholarly work appears in top journals including Journal of Macroeconomics, Journal of Economic Growth, World Development, and American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics.
His research on foreign direct investment and economic growth has received over 6,000 citations, while his work on historical state capacity has been cited more than 1,000 times. His recent paper on India's demonetization policy, which found redistributive effects benefiting poorer regions and households, has been cited in the Economic Report of the President and discussed in relation to the 2024 Nobel Prize in economics.
