Professor Arash Sahraie serves as Chair in Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Aberdeen. His office is located in the William Guild Building, Room T02/T07, Kings College, Old Aberdeen. He has established himself as a leading researcher in visual perception, consciousness, and rehabilitation psychology, with a particular focus on blindsight and visual field defects.
Professor Sahraie's research primarily centers on non-invasive assessment of the visual system, blindsight research (studying conscious and unconscious visual processing after brain injury), development and assessment of vision rehabilitation strategies, and parameters affecting orienting behavior through eye movements and visual attention. His work bridges cognitive neuroscience with clinical applications, particularly in developing therapeutic interventions for patients with visual field defects. Recent publications reveal an expansion of his research interests into pandemic-related cognitive effects, particularly how lockdowns affect time perception and mental health.
His publication record demonstrates consistent productivity in high-impact journals across neuroscience, psychology, and rehabilitation medicine. The research trajectory shows progression from fundamental studies on visual awareness and blindsight toward increasingly applied research on vision rehabilitation, with recent work addressing contemporary issues like pandemic impacts on cognition. His most recent work focuses on supervised and unsupervised rehabilitation approaches for visual field defects, indicating a strong translational focus in his current research program.
Professor Sahraie teaches at multiple levels within the psychology program, including Level 2 Perception courses, Level 4 Visual Awareness, and MRes-level instruction on research funding, grant applications, and academic reporting. His teaching appears closely aligned with his research expertise in visual perception and cognitive processes.
