Arash Komeili is a Professor at the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on bacterial organelles, particularly magnetosomes and ferrosomes, to investigate subcellular complexity in bacteria. He leads a research group exploring the molecular mechanisms of compartmentalization, biomineral production, and iron storage in microbes.
- Research Expertise: Microbiology, Biomineralization, Magnetic Nanoparticles, Bacterial Organelles
- Institution: University of California, Berkeley
- Honors: Bakar Fellows
The Komeili Lab investigates four key areas: genetics of magnetosomes, magnetosome cell biology, diversity of magnetosomes, and ferrosome formation. His work has significant implications for understanding microbial evolution and biotechnology applications. He is affiliated with UC Berkeley's cutting-edge research facilities, including Koshland Hall and the Energy Biosciences Institute.
As a Bakar Fellow, Arash Komeili receives support to translate laboratory discoveries into real-world technologies. His research has also contributed to advancements in microscopy, including the acquisition of a Structured Illumination Microscope for cellular imaging studies.
