Dr. Arani Basu is a Lecturer and Researcher at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS), Heidelberg University, Germany, and on academic leave from his position as Assistant Professor of Sociology at the School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences (SIAS), Krea University, India. He is also a visiting researcher at the Institute for Asian and African Studies (IAAW), Humboldt University, Germany. His primary affiliation is with Heidelberg University, where he contributes to the Department of Visual and Media Anthropology.
Dr. Basu holds a doctoral degree from Humboldt University (awarded as a Hanns-Seidel Fellow) and a postgraduate diploma in Media Studies jointly from the South Asian Media School, Lahore, and Goldsmiths, University of London. His research focuses on digital media, diaspora studies, migration, and the politics of religion in contemporary India. He is currently completing a monograph titled Understanding Propaganda: A Study of Indian Media, set for publication by Palgrave Macmillan in 2025.
His work bridges sociological and anthropological perspectives, examining media-society interactions, transnational migration, and the intersection of religion and politics. He maintains active collaborations across institutions, including his roles at HCTS and SIAS.
Dr. Basu's teaching and research at Krea University include undergraduate modules on media studies and migration, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to social sciences.
