April Heaney is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Director of the Learning Resource Network (LeaRN) Program at the University of Wyoming. She teaches courses in composition, creative non-fiction, and professional writing. As LeaRN Director, she oversees academic success initiatives for undergraduate students, including high-risk and underrepresented populations through programs like Freshmen Interest Groups (FIGs), Synergy Program, STEP tutoring, Summer Bridge, and faculty enrichment initiatives.
Her education includes a PhD, M.A., and B.A. in English from the University of Wyoming. Her research focuses on academic support systems, student self-efficacy, and educational interventions for at-risk learners. Notable publications explore topics such as time management interventions, admissions rhetoric, and learning community efficacy.
- Awards: 2014 First-Year Student Advocate Award; 2012 Extraordinary Merit in Teaching; 2009 Golden Apple Award for Teaching; 2007 Hesburgh Award; 2004 Basic Writing Innovation Award.
Her advising and grant activities center on program development for student success. She leads the Synergy Program, which redefines critical reading and writing for struggling students. Collaborative efforts include curriculum design and faculty training to enhance academic outcomes.
