April D. Fernandes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at NC State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She is currently on research leave from August 2024 to 2025. Her work focuses on punishment and social control mechanisms, monetary sanctions, race and ethnicity dynamics, disability studies, and the intersection of law and society. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington (2015).
Her research interests include the shadow carceral state, pay-to-stay practices, health disparities linked to criminal justice involvement, and urban sociology. She has published extensively in leading journals such as Social Problems, Theoretical Criminology, and Sociological Forum, often examining systemic inequities in criminal justice policies and their societal impacts.
Fernandes' scholarship bridges theory and practice through critical analyses of institutional structures and their effects on marginalized communities. Recent work critiques the commodification of incarceration and the moral frameworks underpinning punitive revenue-generation strategies. Her contributions also extend to curriculum development in criminology, emphasizing inclusive pedagogical approaches.
