April Carcone is a Research Professor at the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences within Wayne State University's School of Medicine. She specializes in behavioral health research, with a focus on patient-provider communication, behavioral interventions for chronic illnesses, and implementation science. Her work targets pediatric and emerging adult populations dealing with obesity, type 1 diabetes, asthma, and HIV.
- Education: BA and MSW from University of Michigan, PhD from Wayne State University
Research Interests: Dr. Carcone's research spans three main areas: (1) examining mechanisms of Motivational Interviewing in clinical contexts; (2) developing behavioral interventions for chronic illness management in youth; and (3) using implementation science to bridge academic interventions with real-world application. Her projects include the IDEA Project, Neural Conversational Agent for Weight Loss Counseling, and the ATHENA Project.
Recent Publications focus on eHealth interventions, diabetes distress, asthma care coordination, and community health worker programs, reflecting trends in digital health tools, behavioral science integration, and addressing health disparities through participatory methods.
Teaching: Dr. Carcone teaches Health Program Evaluation (FPH7230) at Wayne State University.
