Appolinaire Djikeng is a Professor and Chair for Tropical Agriculture and Sustainable Development at the University of Edinburgh, serving as Director of the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH). He holds affiliations with The Roslin Institute and the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. His career spans 20+ years in global agricultural research, including roles at Yale University, J. Craig Venter Institute, and leadership positions at BecA in Nairobi.
Education: PhD in Molecular Parasitology from Brunel University London (2000), focusing on Trypanosoma brucei genome studies. Current administrative roles include Director of CTLGH and Chair of Tropical Agriculture.
Research interests center on livestock genomics, functional genomics, metagenomics, and sustainable tropical agriculture. Key projects involve improving livestock productivity in LMICs through genetic tools, conserving tropical livestock diversity, and developing genomic selection models. Collaborations span institutions like ILRI, SRUC, Rothamsted Research, and the University of New England.
Scientific contributions include over 113 publications and leadership in initiatives like the African Animal Breeding Network. Awards include the Illumina Agricultural Greater Good Initiative Award (2013) and Honorary Professorship (2020).
