Dr. Apostu Izabela Maria is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Mining, Department of Environmental Engineering and Geology of the University of Petroșani. Her work focuses on sustainable mining practices, environmental rehabilitation of degraded lands, and geotechnical safety in mining regions. She actively contributes to research addressing the ecological and technical challenges of lignite open-pit mining in Romania, particularly in the Jiu Valley and Oltenia regions.
Her research interests include soil restoration, waste dump stability analysis, water quality monitoring, and the application of AI in environmental management. She has led over 30 studies since 2017, many involving case studies in the Rovinari and Berbești mining basins. Key projects include assessing geotechnical risks in flooded open-pits, developing methods for mine reclamation, and evaluating the environmental impact of mining projects like Certej.
Dr. Maria’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating engineering solutions with ecological restoration. Her recent publications highlight innovations in plant species selection for pedogenesis acceleration and the use of fuzzy logic for stability assessments. She has also explored post-mining land reuse strategies, such as flooding former pits to create water reservoirs for irrigation and ecological purposes.
Her work frequently engages with regional stakeholders, addressing both technical challenges and societal impacts of mining activities. She has advised on policy compliance for sustainable practices in lignite extraction and contributed to urban landscape assessments in mining-affected areas like Petroșani.
