Anushay Malik is a Senior Lecturer at Simon Fraser University's School for International Studies, affiliated with the Department of International Studies and Global Asia. Her research bridges labor history, migration studies, and anti-colonial movements, with a focus on South Asian contexts and transnational narratives. She explores how historical contexts shape political aspirations and identities, particularly through the lens of marginalized communities.
Her work includes examining stateless Bengali migrants in Karachi and South Asian labor movements in British Columbia. She co-authored Union Zindabad!, documenting South Asian labor history in BC, and is expanding this research to rural BC farmworker experiences. Public history projects like exhibitions 'Kaghazi Kashtiyan' and 'Truths Not Often Told' use counter-storytelling to highlight marginalized migration histories.
Malik has secured grants including a £207,666 UK AHRC grant (2020-2023) for her work on Bengali migrants in Pakistan and a 2023 grant on South Asian farmworker women in BC. She integrates public history into teaching, engaging students through museum collaborations and curatorial projects.
Her publications span labor movements, religious minority narratives, and urban development in Pakistan, with a focus on oral histories and alternative political narratives. Recent work critiques how dominant historical discourses marginalize grassroots struggles while exploring pathways for inclusive historiography.
