Anu Katainen is a Senior University Lecturer in Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki, where she also holds a Title of Docent and serves as a Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences. With over 83 research outputs and involvement in numerous research projects, she is an active contributor to the fields of sociology, social policy, and alcohol studies.
Dr. Katainen's research primarily focuses on alcohol policy, social determinants of health, social class differences in health behaviors, and qualitative research methods. Her work often examines Finnish drinking culture, policy reforms, and the social aspects of substance use. She has conducted extensive research on non-alcoholic beer consumption, abstinence patterns, and the sociodemographic factors influencing drinking behaviors.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward examining the intersection of health, social policy, and cultural practices. She has produced significant work on sickness absence among healthcare workers, the implementation of social impact financing in the welfare state, and the changing patterns of alcohol consumption in Finland. Her methodological approach frequently combines qualitative analysis with broader sociological frameworks to understand health behaviors within their social context.
Dr. Katainen has been actively involved in several major research projects, including "Raittius ja juomiskulttuuri 2020-luvulla (RAIKU)" (Abstinence and drinking culture in the 2020s) as project manager (2024-2026), and "SILE: Silent agents affected by legislation" as a participant (2023-2026). She has also supervised multiple theses at the Master's and Licentiate levels, contributing to the next generation of social science researchers.
Her professional activities extend beyond research to include significant contributions to public discourse. She has participated in 72 activities including organizing conferences, peer reviewing manuscripts, giving public talks, and serving on committees. Notably, she has been active in the Kettil Bruun Society and has served as chair of the Alkoholi- ja huumetutkijain seura (Finnish Society for Addiction Research).
Dr. Katainen regularly engages with media, having contributed to 25 press/media items where she provides expert commentary on alcohol policy, youth drinking patterns, and related social issues. This demonstrates her commitment to translating academic research into public knowledge and policy impact.
