António M. Magalhães

António M. Magalhães is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal. He holds a Doktor (PhD) in Higher Education Policies from the University of Twente (2001) and an Agregação in Education Sciences from the University of Porto (2008). His research focuses on the sociology of education, education policy analysis, and the interplay between state governance and higher education institutions, particularly in European contexts. He employs discourse analysis as a central methodological framework.

Magalhães leads the Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies (CIPES) and has coordinated major projects such as the socio-economic mapping of higher education students in Lisbon and Porto (2022–2024) and studies on higher education autonomy in Europe (2023–2025). He has extensive international collaboration, including with Danish, Dutch, and UK institutions, and has advised on policy reforms addressing student welfare, Brexit impacts, and sustainability in HEIs.

His publications span over 30 years, analyzing topics like academic identity, institutional governance, and policy convergence. Notable works include studies on early school leaving (RESL.eu project) and the transformation of Portuguese higher education post-1974.
