António Filipe Pimentel

António Filipe Pimentel serves as Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum since 2021 and holds an Assistant Professor position in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Coimbra. His career spans significant leadership in Portuguese cultural institutions, including Director of the National Museum of Ancient Art (2010-2019) and Director of the Grão Vasco Museum (2009/10).

• Doctoral degree in History (specializing in History of Art) (2003) from the University of Coimbra

Research Interests: Pimentel's scholarly work centers on the intersection of art, architecture, and power structures in Portuguese history. His expertise spans architectural history (particularly the Royal Building of Mafra), cultural heritage management, museum studies, and the political dimensions of modern art. His research demonstrates deep engagement with European art historical traditions while emphasizing Portugal's unique cultural trajectory through over 300 international publications.

Professional Recognition: National corresponding academic member of the National Academy of Fine Arts, corresponding academic member of the Naval Academy, and member of the Scientific Society of the Portuguese Catholic University. He coordinated the University of Coimbra's successful UNESCO World Heritage Site candidacy.
