Antti Räsänen serves as Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki, concurrently holding the title of Docent in the same faculty. He actively supervises doctoral candidates across four programs: Theology and Religious Studies, Social Sciences, and School, Education, Society, and Culture, reflecting his interdisciplinary leadership.
His research centers on Practical Theology with emphases on religious literacy assessment frameworks, paradigm shifts in Finnish theological education, and empirical studies of religious knowledge transmission. Recent work investigates how 9th-grade students comprehend world religions, develops international comparative tools for measuring religious literacy, and analyzes evolving trends in practical theology within Finland's academic landscape since 2000. This scholarship bridges theological theory with educational practice, addressing societal needs in pluralistic contexts.
Räsänen's publication trajectory reveals intensified focus since 2021 on methodological innovation in religious literacy research, cross-cultural comparison, and refugee community studies. His collaborative projects frequently engage international partners, particularly in German-Finnish theological education initiatives.
Academic leadership defines his profile: he has supervised 11 doctoral theses and participates in 9 active research projects, including Academy of Finland-funded university profiling initiatives (DIVSOL, InterEarth RESET) and church-collaborative ventures like Suomen ev.lut.kirkko Teologia.fi2024. His 57 documented academic activities include conference organization, doctoral committee service, and international peer review for journals like the Journal of Empirical Theology.
